What are Newman Centers?
Newman Centers are faith-based community centers that foster intellectual, moral and spiritual growth - promoting the ideal of educating the individual as a whole. They are often located on or near secular universities. The Diocese of Brownsville has established Newman Centers at The University of Texas – Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College. In more recent years, Newman Clubs have formed at Texas State Technical College and at South Texas College. The diocese employs full-time staff to coordinate campus ministry activities and has designated priests assigned as chaplains for liturgical and sacramental services at the Newman Centers. The UTPA Newman Center is also used as a retreat house by several of the lay movements across the Valley.
